50/ Botany
The author, who is a botanist, claims that the imperialist view prevails in his field because some new species that are “discovered” are often already known and used by people in the region it was discovered in. He claims that science has “appropriated indigenous knowledge and downplayed its depth and complexity”.
51/ Sandwiches
According to a Portland school principal, the sandwich may be problematic because people in some cultures do not eat sandwich bread. But contrary to what some media outlets have claimed, there is no ban on PB&J sandwiches.
52/ Environmental Activism
The author of this Vice article walked away from her work on climate change because she didn’t like that activists were mostly the same skin color as her.
53/ Women
The author claims women have always been apart of the problem in America’s racism. The article also asserts that the 53 percent of women who voted for Trump in 2016 still want to cling onto that notion of white supremacy.
54/ Science
The writer states that every corner of science is rooted in racism and thus should be decolonized to make way for conversations about race.
55/ Western philosophy
The article asserts that Western philosophy is racist because many philosophy departments in the West fail to have a big curriculum on Eastern philosophy.
56/ Libraries
The author of the Library Journal article claims that libraries are problematic because many of the books in the library were written by “straight white men” and therefore it is “white men ideas taking up all the space in our library stacks.”
57/ Dogs
The author cites a study that dogs can hold prejudices against people of different races because their owners don’t interact outside their race as much.
58/ Yoga
The author writes that yoga was originally not done for fitness but was “intended to prepare the body as a foundation for unity with the spirit.” Yoga as a fitness routine is a colonial construct and thus needs to be decolognized to get back to its true roots.
59/ Wine
The organization Court of Master Sommeliers has abandoned the use of the term “master” in referencing its members in order “to be more inclusive and help diversity the wine industry”. I have to agree with this one. Not because of any racist undertones—but because it is cringy as f*ck.
60/ Shoes
Katie Perry faces backlash over her shoe designs. They come in different colors and one of them happens to be black. So…racism. Apparently.
